    Strategies to control late blight in potatoes in Europe

    In Europe an aggressive genetically diverse population of potato late blight is present which regularly causes problems in all potato growing regions. It is therefore of the utmost importance that blight is managed in an integrated way by combining a range of measures. Hygiene measures can keep the number of primary sources of inoculum low. In a number of European countries campaigns are ongoing to increase the awareness of growers to reduce the risk of early inoculum sources such as dumps, volunteers and infected seed. The use of varieties with stable resistance for foliar and tuber blight is also a part of an integrated control strategy. In intermediate resistant varieties possibilities are investigated to reduce the input of fungicides. Fungicides still have a key role to play in the integrated control of late blight. In order to optimize the use of fungicides it is important to know the effectiveness and type of activity of the active ingredients to control blight. The use of fungicides should be targeted by using information on infection conditions based on weather data, disease pressure and fungicide characteristics. Decision Support Systems (DSS) can be used to integrate and organize all the available information required for decisions to control late blight

    Experimental control strategies reducing the fungicide input at a practical scale

    Phytophthora infestans is the most devastating disease in potato cultivation. Chemical control is necessary to ensure a healthy crop. At the same time Dutch governmental policy asks for a reduction of the environmental impact of potato late blight control by 75% in 2012 as compared to 1996-1998. The aim of the experiments was to compare Decision Support Systems with different approaches to blight risk management for their ability to reduce the fungicide input without compromising control efficacy. Considerable savings, up to 81% when compared to weekly, full dose rate, spray schedules, can be achieved by using information on cultivar resistance, length of the critical period and disease pressure to decide whether or not to spray. The subroutine calculating the potential for viable transport of spores is only effective on resistant varieties as the threshold was exceeded with every critical period on less resistant cultivars.     The construction of a normative instrument for the measurement of moral reasoning

    The main aim of this study was to construct a normative instrument for the measurement of different levels of moral reasoning. The sample comprised 426 undergraduate students in Industrial Psychology and Personnel Management from two Afrikaans speaking universities. A questionnaire was developed to measure different levels of moral reasoning on a normative scale. A factor analysis on 90 items yielded two factors. These factors were interpreted as principled moral reasoning and prescriptive moral reasoning. The two scales were subjected to an item analysis and yielded reliability coefficients of 0,936 and 0,937. The implications of these findings are discussed

    Appropriateness of Management Zones for Characterizing Spatial Variability of Soil Properties and Irrigated Corn Yields across Years

    Recent precision-agriculture research has focused on use of management zones (MZ) as a method for variable application of inputs like N. The objectives of this study were to determine (i) if landscape attributes could be aggregated into MZthat characterize spatial varia- tion in soil chemical properties and corn yields and (ii) if temporal variability affects expression of yield spatial variability. This work was conducted on an irrigated cornfield near Gibbon, NE. Five landscape attributes, including a soil brightness image (red, green, and blue bands), elevation, and apparent electrical conductivity, were acquired for the field.Ageoreferenced soil-sampling scheme was used to determine soil chemical properties (soil pH, electrical conductivity, P, and organic matter). Georeferenced yield monitor data were collected for five (1997–2001) seasons. The five landscape attributes were aggregated into four MZ using principal-component analysis of landscape attributes and unsupervised classification of principal-component scores. All of the soil chemical properties differed among the four MZ. While yields were observed to differ by up to 25% between the highest- and lowest-yielding MZ in three of five seasons, receiving average precipitation, less-pronounced (≤5%) differences were noted among the same MZ in the driest and wettest seasons. This illustrates the significant role temporal variability plays in altering yield spatial variability, even under irrigation. Use of MZ for variable application tem, of inputs like N would only have been appropriate for this field in three out of the five seasons, seriously restricting the use of this approach under variable environmental conditions

    Inflammation in injury-induced vascular remodelling : functional involvement and therapeutical options

    The aim of this thesis was to gain more insight in the involvement of inflammatory processes in vessel wall remodeling seen after PTA or bypass surgery and put these processes in the perspective of restenosis, vein graft failure and potential therapeutic preventive strategies. Therefore, we firstly focused on inflammation in general, using the anti-inflammatory agent Dexamethasone, assessing the effects of such a broad approach on restenosis and vein graft remodeling. Then, we further focused on some specific parts of the immune system, namely Interleukin 10 (IL10), chemokines and the complement cascade. Il10 was chosen because it is one of the most studied anti-inflammatory cytokines and this property makes it a potential candidate for ant-restenosis therapy. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that chemokines are involved in vascular remodeling, since they are generally known for their regulatory properties regarding influx of inflammatory cells to tissues and this is one of the first phenomena seen in vascular remodeling.
